If you struggle with creativity or think you have none, then this is for you!

When was the last time you opened up your creative side? We all have a creative side, whether we know it or not. Most of us desire to create something, whether it’s painting, drawing, or music. Perhaps it’s working with clay, cooking, sewing,  or even dancing! Still, so many think they don’t have a creative bone in their body.

Each new day brings creative potential. The great thing is that creativity can be expressed in so many  ways. Artists, writers, producers, musicians, and actors are all creative. So are draftsmen, engineers and fashion designers. To extend beyond ‘the arts”, how about CEO’s, bus drivers or lawyers? Or maybe dentists, politicians or accountants? Yes, all are creative, and do you know what? So are you! You may not call yourself that, or think of yourself as creative, but you are.

If you still don’t believe me, I’ll share a little secret with you. You actually begin every day with a creative act. You wake up, look at your closet, determine how you feel, and dress yourself. You might ask how this is creative when it’s just a simple everyday thing. True, it is. However, your brain chooses what shirt goes with what pants and which colors match and which don’t. You decide which outfit will make you most comfortable for the day ahead. Next, you put together breakfast making a handful of decisions, stemming from how you feel. Further on, you’ll make decisions on the way to work. Which route is faster, or more scenic, reflecting how you are feeling. Which music to listen to, where to park. All creative decisions and all come from a feeling within. Just like art and just like creativity. Yet, everyday, we stifle creativity because we tend to lack the faith to believe in ourselves.

Many people can create things, beautiful things such as art, soufflés, or music. They do so because they desire to. There’s an apparent prompting to create. Then on the opposite realm, there’s those who’ve suppress that feeling so deep for so long, they’ve completely forgotten about it. Perhaps you loved art as a child, or you dreamed of performing on stage. Maybe you envisioned yourself directing movies or loved a musical instrument. Whatever it was, it’s long gone now. But here’s the thing. Deep inside there is a small flickering ember. That ember is a dream. And no matter how you try to douse it out, it won’t stop flickering.

If you don’t know where to start, I’ll give you two simple steps you can do. First (and easiest), step outside and notice the beauty all around you. What colors do you see? Is there a sunrise or sunset? Notice the shape of the clouds. That’s step 1. Just notice things. Second, get a journal or any writing paper and start drawing everything. Draw your breakfast, your cat, a plant or your shoe. No matter how mundane or redundant the object is, it commemorates a moment. Draw at least 15 minutes every day.

If you approach these exercises with artistic attitude, you’ll unlock creativity and something unique will transpire. Reaching that place is just a matter of attention and concentration. Then as time goes on, you can look back these drawings and remember the moment you started (or reinstated) your creative side. Drawing these little gems every day, you’ll begin to recognize the incredible gift you’ve been given each morning.

Let’s go! Time to get creative!
